1928 S. Nogales Street Rowland Heights, CA 91748 (626) 935-8210 (626)964-6450 (fax) Principal: Dr. Melissa Smith The Community Day School opened its new campus on Nogales Street in Rowland Heights (in close proximity to the District Office) in February of 2005 to accommodate the approximate 100 students who attend the school from local campuses. The Community Day School, which is specially designed for youngsters in grades 7-12 who have been expelled from other RUSD schools, provides a highly structured environment organized around each student's learning and behavioral goals. The goal of the program is to successfully return students to their local school within two semesters. Because of the structure of the program and small class sizes, Rowland’s program has a low recidivism rate. Each student works toward goals outlined in an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), which is established by the Rowland Unified Board of Education at the time of expulsion. In order to return to a local school, students must maintain a “C” grade in all classes and meet the behavioral and attendance goals outlined in their ILP. Students who fail to meet the ILP goals are referred to the Los Angeles County Office of Education for educational program placement. Classes are kept small - at least 20:1 - to ensure students meet grade-level standards. Many classes also are supported by an instructional assistant. Parents are actively involved and work with the classroom teacher to ensure that any missed homework and/or classroom assignments are completed, so that the student can successfully accomplish the ILP goals and return to a traditional school setting. Classes are held M-F, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The school is also open for a six-week summer session. Program features · New facility offers increased number of classrooms. · Small class sizes - often 20:2 - with a teacher and instructional assistant. · Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) focused on education and behavioral goals as established by the Board. · High parent participation to ensure students successfully re-enter local schools. · High student success rate.
